Altimeter, Model: 4FGH 20, 30,000 feet, inHg, 2-pointer

Note: The Winter-4555 below is much more popular than this altimeter because it is a 3-pointer altimeter with 3 times the resolution of this Winter-4445 altimeter. The long pointer on the W-4555 goes through 1,000 feet per revolution. The long pointer on this Winter-4445 goes through 3,000 feet per revolution. However, if you want a certified small, 57 mm altimeter that is rated and calibrated to 30,000 feet then this is your only option. It looks great and is arguably easier to read at-a-glance than the 4555. Click on the image at right to see how sharp it looks.

It is the only small, 57 mm altimeter for use in a certificated airplane that I am aware of. However, there may be some compromises due to its small size. Some pilots find it more difficult to read than other (larger) altimeters.

Also, the accuracy appears to be less than that of other (larger) altimeters. The Manual and Specifications indicate that the altitude error may be as much as +/- 120 feet at 8000 feet - more at higher altitudes. That doesn't concern or surprise me, but it is good to be aware of it.

Note: The W-4445 altimeter is calibrated up to 30,000 feet, but will indicate up to about 49,200 feet (15,000 m). It will not be damaged if you go higher than that.
