Cable, ILEC SN-10 (S/N: > 99) to Instrument Panel, PS-5a and Cambridge Aero Instruments GPS-NAV
Note: This cable does not connect the GPS-NAV's 5V power output to the PDA. It is designed for use with Pocket PCs which can draw more current than the GPS-NAV can supply such iPAQ models. Therefore a Goddard PS-5a power converter is required. If you are using a Compaq Aero 1500 series Pocket PC you should use the SN10b-Pnl-1500-GNAV-1 cable above.
This cable is designed to enable a PDA (Pocket PC or Palm device) and an SN-10 to be connected to a GPS-NAV. It replaces the ILEC "Cockpit Panel Cable". It includes all the connections found in that cable. 4 cables exit the back of the DB-9m connector that plugs into the SN-10. A 0.5 m (19.7") cable goes to a DB-9f connector that is to be mounted in the instrument panel. This connector is used for data transfers to the SN-10 from a PC and for connection of the SN10-R remote control unit. A 0.5 m (19.7") cable goes to a DB-9f connector for connection to a Goddard PS-5a power converter which is connected to the PDA through a cable like the I38C-x or a cradle like the Cumulus iPAQ Cradle. A 0.5 m (19.7") cable goes to 2 connectors for the GPS-NAV. A 0.5 m (19.7") cable goes to a "PDA Input" switch that is used to select whether GPS data goes directly to both the SN-10 and the PDA (for flight declarations and flight log downloads) or through the SN-10 to the PDA (for use in flight). The transmit line on the PDA is connected to the GPS-NAV receive line on the DB-9 connector so that flight logs may be downloaded and task declarations may be uploaded.
New Version
In August of 2005 ILEC released a new version of the SN-10 firmware which can send receive data from a GPS, add ILEC wind and vario data to the GPS data stream and send all the data to a PDA. Details are available here. The updated cable can be used with both SN-10b units with old (firmware<2.31) or new (firmware >=2.31). Due to the wiring change required to accommodate this new software feature, this cable has been re-designed to include a "PDA Input" switch. Below is a summary of the switch positions.
PDA Input Switch Positions
- "GPS/Declare/No PDA" - GPS output is sent directly to both the PDA (from the GPS-NAV's DB-9 connector) and the SN-10 (from the GPS-NAV's RJ connector). Allows the flight recorder to respond directly to the PDA to acknowledge task declarations or download flight logs. Use only during task declarations and flight log downloads with SN-10 units with firmware version 2.31 or greater. Used at all times with SN-10 units with firmware version < 2.31. Also used at all times when a PDA is not connected.
- "SN10/Fly with PDA" - The PDA receives GPS data from the SN-10. GPS output is sent only to the SN-10's "NMEA input" line from the GPS-NAV's RJ connector. The SN-10 adds SN-10 data to the GPS data stream and sends the data to the PDA. The SN-10's transmit line is connected to the PDA's receive line. Use this position when in flight or when not doing a task declaration or flightlog download.
Old Version - no longer available
Previous versions of this cable split the GPS data and sent it directly to both the PDA and the SN-10. No switch was used.
Using a Pocket PC for SN-10 Waypoint Database and Fight Log Transfers
It is possible to send waypoint files to the SN-10 from a Pocket PC. You can also download flight logs from the SN-10 to the Pocket PC. That way you don't need to bring a PC to the airport. Details are available here.
