Wingtip-Skids-Foam Wingtip Skids - Foam (set of 2)
Set of 2 foam wingtip skids.  They are made from a light weight black foam material.  Replaceable metal inserts are used to keep the foam from wearing away rapidly on hard surfaced runways.  Teardrop shape to minimize drag.

Notes From The Manufacturer (Ulli Werneburg)

"They are made of high density rubber/foam material which is also used on shoe soles such as the old Hush Puppies. It has turned out that this material lasts very well, particularly since the metal 'shoe' takes most of the scraping. I have had mine on my ASW-24 for about 4 years and they still look really good.

Ideally, for installation the top (straight) surface should be sanded a bit to make a slight concave surface to match the wing contour. It is easy to do with a drum sanding tool or file, and you can then customize it to fit your airfoil.

I recommend the use of high quality gasket silicone material (readily available at all automotive supply stores) for attaching them to the wing. This provides excellent adhesion."

Wingtip-Skids-Polymer Wingtip Skids - Polymer (set of 2)
Set of 2 polymer wingtip skids.  They are made from a rubbery polymer material.  Replaceable metal inserts are used to keep the skid from wearing away rapidly on hard surfaced runways.  Teardrop shape to minimize drag.

Installation Instructions

  • Remove old wing tip skid and get rid of all old cement residue with appropriate cleaner such as contact cement cleaner
  • Test fit new wing tip skid onto wing.  Sand area where skid is to be mounted slightly.
  • Wipe contact surface of wing with acetone or similar light solvent and apply a thin, even layer of high quality automotive gasket silicone compound (blue or black) to the wing skid.  Carefully apply the skid to the desired location.  Fasten skid temporarily with tape.
  • Remove excess silicone material as it is squeezed out when pressure is applied to the skid.
  • Let sit for at least 3 hours, then carefully remove tape.  Best adhesion takes at least 12 hours at normal temperatures.
