Overview
Mountain High makes a variety of oxygen cylinders. The most
popular series is their AL series. The KF Series weighs about 1/2 as
much as the AL series. However, is quite a bit more expensive,
requires recurrent pressure testing every 3 years, and must be replaced
after 15 years.
Cylinder Lengths
The Aluminum cylinder lengths shown in the tables below include the cylinder
and valve - no regulator. The added length for a standard XCR regulator is about
1.75 inches (45 mm).
The composite cylinder lengths shown in the tables below include the
cylinder only - no valve or regulator. The added length for a standard
US CGA-540 valve and XCR regulator is about 3.5 inches (89 mm).
Cylinder Valve Port Types
There are 2 types of cylinder valve port types commonly used in aircraft.
It is important to know which one is on your cylinder when ordering a
regulator for it. The regulator attaches to this port.
- CGA-540 - US standard, Approximate outer
diameter of threads: 0.875" (22.2 mm)
- DIN-477 - European standard, Approximate
outer diameter of threads: 1" (25.4 mm)
All cylinders provided by Mountain High use
3/4 x 16 UNF straight threads. However, 2 different types of o-rings are used -
one for aluminum cylinders and a different type for fiber wrapped cylinders.
Taking oxygen bottles on commercial airline
flights can be a bit of a pain. A customer recently received his
Mountain High system while in the USA and wanted to take it back to Europe
with him. He found that the TSA requires that the valve be removed
from the cylinder so they can look inside the cylinder. Mountain High
said that the valve can be removed quite easily. The threads on the
valve are straight threads (not tapered threads) - which is nice. An
o-ring is used to make the seal. When putting the valve back onto the
cylinder it is very important that a torque wrench is use. The torque
wrench should be set for 60 to 65 ft*Lbs. Please see the TSA web site
in the link below for details.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/compressed_gas.shtm
When ordering cylinder valves, it is
necessary to specify the service pressure rating of the cylinder that it
will be used with. Then the correct burst plug can be supplied in the
valve.
Cylinder Testing Requirements
I am often asked to clarify the life and testing requirements for oxygen
cylinders. The table below should help.
Note: These testing and life requirements are
specified by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Oxygen cylinders
are classified as "pressure vessels". All cylinders provided by
Mountain High meet all U.S. D.O.T. requirements and also meet all the
requirements for Canada.
Cylinder Life and
Hydro Testing Requirements
These requirements are from the U.S. Department of
Transportation. |

The AL
aluminum oxygen cylinders are featured in our XCP, XCR & EDS
portable oxygen systems. These cylinders feature our low-profile
CGA-540 (oxygen) valve with pressure gauge that shows the amount in
the cylinder at all times with the valve open or closed. Although
these aluminum cylinders are intended for portable 'carry-on'
applications, they have been used in some airborne applications. See
our Full Pack cylinder harness & carry-caddy for these cylinders.
Also see CMK cylinder hold-down kits. |
CFF
Series

Aluminum core with
Silica (glass) Fiber Wrap |
 |
CFF
cylinders have an aluminum core with silica (glass) fiber wrap and
are DOT-E 7277-3000 rated. These are high-pressure oxygen cylinders
for service pressures up to 3,000 PSI. They can be optionally
ordered with a DIN-477 (Euro-norm) valve with gauge. |
CFFC
Series

Aluminum core with
Carbon Fiber Wrap |
 |
|
KF
Series
|
Aluminum core with
Kevlar Fiber Wrap |
 |
The
lightest aircraft oxygen cylinder that technology has to offer.
These Kevlar fiber-wrapped cylinders have been developed
specifically for aircraft use.
The KF series cylinders are the perfect solution for cylinder
installations far aft in the aircraft previously not possible
before. A thin-wall, seamless aluminum (6061-T6) alloy
'liner-cylinder' is reinforced by a full over-wrapping of Kevlar
fibers sealed in epoxy. This yields about a 50% to 60% weight
savings over conventional cylinder technology without any compromise
in safety.
These cylinders are preferred by many who build the state-of-the-art
composite-fiber aircraft. They are made under a DOT mfg. protocol.
If used in commercial applications or in a type-certified aircraft,
the DOT service life is 15 years from the first hydro-test date and
hydro-tests are done every three years. The KF series cylinders are
complemented by our RCV/RCR remote-controlled-regulator system and
built-in EDS system. The KF series cylinders can be secured for
carry-about applications with the Full-Pack and Tuff-Pack cylinder
carry-caddy harness systems.

Kevlar Fiber cylinders are the lightest technology has to offer and
are designed specifically and approved for aircraft applications. A
simplified fabrication process is where the cylinder liner is made
(steps 1,2,3 & 4) Fiber wrap (steps 5 & 6) are wrapped around the
liner. Threads for the valving device is done after step 4 and
before step 5. Epoxy is applied during the wrapping process.
If the cylinder is to be used in
type certified aircraft, by current DOT protocol, it must be
hydro tested every 3 years and taken out of service if it fails
or after 15 years from the first hydro test date comes about. Even
if the cylinder passes hydro test. DOT protocol does not
specifically detail any requirements for these cylinders if used in
experimental aircraft. As of July of 2006, any Kevlar cylinder
tested after that date can be hydro tested every 5 years (instead of
3). That is true for cylinders manufactured before that date. |

Oxygen Pressure Ratings
Oxygen cylinders specifications are sometimes shown at 2 different
pressures. The 1850 rating is excellent for comparison purposes and in
locations where that is the maximum fill pressure available. The
higher ratings are nice to know but are not available at all oxygen supply
locations.

I try to stock as many parts as possible so I can ship to you immediately
upon the receipt of your order. However, MH offers an extremely broad
range of products and kits so it is not possible for me to stock everything.
However, it is possible for MH to ship parts I don't have in stock directly
to you very quickly. That is good for you because you receive the
products quickly. It is good for me because it reduces the amount of
inventory I need to stock and also eliminates the cost of shipping the
products to me. The items marked "In Stock" below are almost always in
my stock here in Minnesota, USA. The items marked "1 Day" (or similar)
can be shipped directly from the vendor in Oregon, USA to you.

KF
Series Oxygen Cylinders -
Aluminum core with
Kevlar Fiber Wrap
The
lightest aircraft oxygen cylinder that technology has to offer.
These Kevlar fiber-wrapped cylinders have been developed
specifically for aircraft use.
The KF series cylinders are the perfect solution for cylinder
installations far aft in the aircraft previously not possible
before. A thin-wall, seamless aluminum (6061-T6) alloy
'liner-cylinder' is reinforced by a full over-wrapping of Kevlar
fibers sealed in epoxy. This yields about a 50% to 60% weight
savings over conventional cylinder technology without any compromise
in safety.
These cylinders are preferred by many who build the state-of-the-art
composite-fiber aircraft. They are made under a DOT mfg. protocol.
If used in commercial applications or in a type-certified aircraft,
the DOT service life is 15 years from the first hydro-test date and
hydro-tests are done every three years. The KF series cylinders are
complemented by our RCV/RCR remote-controlled-regulator system and
built-in EDS system. The KF series cylinders can be secured for
carry-about applications with the Full-Pack and Tuff-Pack cylinder
carry-caddy harness systems.
If the cylinder is to be used in type certified aircraft, by current
DOT protocol, it must be hydro tested every three years and taken
out of service if it fails or after 15 years from the first hydro test
date comes about. Even if the cylinder passes hydro test. DOT protocol
does not specifically detail any requirements for these cylinders if
used in experimental aircraft.
Specify cylinder model number and valve when ordering.

CMK Ω ('Omega') Cylinder
Mounting Kits
The CMK 'OMEGA' type bracket cylinder mounting kit is a rigid,
low-profile, high-strength method of securing aluminum or
composite-fiber cylinders to a flat surface. With the CMK brackets
bolted in place, the cylinder is held into place by a set of stainless
steel taut-bands. The taut-bands are the quick-release, ("open-loop")
type in which the cylinder is easily placed and removed by loosening the
grip-knobs and uncoupling the quick-release latch on the bands.

CMK "A" Bracket Cylinder
Mounting Kits
Made specially for fiber-wound cylinders, the CMK-A bracket cylinder
mounting kit is a rigid, low profile method of securing either aluminum
or fiber-wound cylinders to a flat surface inside a deep area where
removal on the axis is not possible and scratching the cylinder may be a
concern. A wide fabric strap is used to secure the cylinder, minimizing
the possibility of damaging the cylinder. The CMK-A provides the
greatest number of options for mounting these types of cylinders. The
brackets can be positioned anywhere throughout the circumference of the
fabric belts. The fabric belts can then be rotated so the tightening
buckle is positioned almost anywhere desired for easy access. Used with
many composite-fiber aircraft.
