Overview
Garmin has as wide array of GPS products. At this time I offer only
the simple GPS receiver below. The Garmin GPS 35-HVS was popular with
SN10 owners because it was small and ran on 12V power. However, it is
no longer available. The GPS 16-HVS is a very good substitute.
It is much less expensive and is a WAAS compatible receiver. It also
runs on 12V. The only downside to the GPS 16-HVS is that it is a bit
larger than the GPS35.

GPS16x-HVS |
Garmin GPS 16x HVS
The GPS 16x HVS sensor features a
high-sensitivity receiver, integrated antenna and rugged, waterproof
design that makes it useful for a variety of applications.
Get Accurate Data
This high-sensitivity, 12-channel receiver continuously tracks
satellites and reports your precise position. It is also WAAS-enabled,
so it can determine your precise location to within 3 meters — without
using an external DGPS beacon receiver.
Leave Interference Behind
The GPS 16x HVS offers excellent EMI/RFI performance, so you can use it
near mobile computing devices and wireless communications equipment
without worrying about interference.
The GPS 16x HVS is a high-sensitivity GPS sensor that replaces the GPS
16.
This is a great, simple GPS for soaring applications. I like
it because it can be powered with 12 VDC and does not have a
magnet built into it (like many small GPS units do). It is WAAS compatible.
It is perfect for use with an LXNAV V7
variometer. The V7 powers the unit with 12V and the GPS allows the
V7 to do simply "get home" navigation with final glide calculations.
It works very nicely with the ILEC SN-10b
because the SN-10b can power the GPS16x HVS. When ordered with an
SN-10b you can have the GPS16x HVS connected to the SN10's panel cable for $59.
A quick-disconnect connector is used to make it easy to route the GPS
cable through small openings.
The GPS 16x HVS comes with a cable with
an RJ45 (Ethernet) connector. It can be ordered with an optional
DB-9f connector for use with a Pocket PC. The DB-9f connector
plugs directly into a Goddard PS-5a power converter. The PS-5a
provides 12V power for the GPS16x and 5V power for the Pocket PC.
Note: The GPS 16x HVS defaults to a baud
rate of 4800. I can re-program it for any other baud rate for
free. I have PC cables setup for that. I recommend 19200
baud if you think you may replace it in the future with a FLARM device.
Connector Options
- RJ45 connector, the customer must
connect the +12 VDC power, common and transmit lines. (standard)
Note: It is necessary to connect 3 wires to common - The black
(common), yellow (enable) and the shield drain wire should all be
connected to ground. That makes it tough to simply attach an
RJ connector because it's not possible to stuff 3 wires into one
slot on an RJ connector.
- LXNAV V7 Variometer
The GPS 16x-HVS works great with the LXNAV V7 variometer. An
RJ-Coupler-RJ45-RJ45 ($15) and
Goddard
Cable-GPS16xHVS-V7-0p3 ($50) can be used to connect
the GPS directly to an LXNAV V7. The V7 powers the GPS with
12V.
- Let me know if you want me to
shorten the power/data cable ($20). It is supplied with a 5 m
(about 16 feet) long cable.
- Goddard PS-5a
DB-9f, a standard connector for use
with a Goddard PS-5a power converter and a Pocket PC. $30
- PS-5a Pin 2 (GPS TX) to white wire
in Garmin GPS 16x-HVS cable
- PS-5a Pin 5 (ground) to black and
yellow wires in Garmin GPS 16x-HVS cable
- PS-5a Pin 7 (+12V) to red wire in
Garmin GPS 16x-HVS cable

Garmin-GA25-BNC |
Garmin GA 25 BNC GPS Antenna for Colibri,
LX20, LX5000, LX7000
and LX7007
Products
Includes a 2.9 m (9.5 ft) cable with a BNC connector. A similar
antenna is included with the Colibri, LX7000 and LX7007. It is not
compatible with the LX8000.
Removable Magnets Installed
The antenna has 2 magnets installed under a thin metal plate on the
bottom of the unit. The magnets can be removed using a small
screwdriver. Just remove the clear plastic sticker that covers the
back and set it aside. Then remove the 4 screws at the outside
corners. It is not necessary to remove the 2 screws near the
cable. Then remove the metal plate and remove the 2 long flat
magnets. Then re-install the metal plate, 4 screws and clear
plastic sticker.
I can shorten the cable to any length you
desire. I charge $19.95 for the new BNC connector and labor.
You can select the cable length when you place your order. There is also
an option for a BNC-RA BNC elbow
adapter for $9.95 (see below). With the BNC elbow adapter the minimum
recommended antenna cable length for mounting the antenna on top of a Colibri is 8 inches (20.3 cm). Without
the optional elbow adapter 10 inches (25.4 cm) is the minimum recommended
antenna cable length for use with Colibri. |

BNC Elbow
The BNC elbow can be used with some GPS and Radio antenna cables to
reduce the amount of cable space required at the point the antenna
connects to the device. It is very nice for use on the bottom of
the Colibri because it allows the use of a very short antenna cable. |

Garmin GPS35-HVS TracPak
- No Longer Available
This is a great, simple GPS for soaring applications. I like
it because it can be powered with 12 VDC and does not have a
magnet built into it (like many small GPS units do). It is not
WAAS compatible but the increase in accuracy available from WAAS
compatible GPS units is not a big advantage for soaring pilots.
It works very nicely with the ILEC SN-10b
because the SN-10b can power the GPS35. When ordered with an
SN-10b can have the GPS35 connected to the ILEC panel cable for $39.
The GPS35-HVS comes with a cable with
bare leads. It can be ordered with an optional DB-9f connector for
use with a Pocket PC. The DB-9f connector plugs directly into a
Goddard PS-5a power converter. The PS-5a provides 12V power for
the GPS35 and 5V power for the Pocket PC.

The Garmin® GPS 35 TracPak is a complete
GPS receiver and embedded antenna designed for a broad spectrum of OEM
(Original Equipment Manufacturers) system applications. Based on the
proven technology found in other Garmin 12–channel GPS receivers, the
GPS 35 will track up to twelve satellites at a time while providing
one-second navigation updates and low power consumption. Its
far-reaching capability meets the sensitivity requirements of land
navigation as well as the dynamics requirements of high-performance
aircraft.
The GPS 35 TracPak design utilizes the latest technology and high-level
circuit integration to achieve superior performance while minimizing
space and power requirements. Utilizing Garmin's own proprietary
chipset, all critical components of the system including the RF/IF
receiver hardware and the digital baseband are designed and manufactured
by Garmin to ensure outstanding quality and capability.
The GPS 35 TracPak is housed in a black, water-resistant case and
designed to withstand rugged operating conditions. While the GPS 35
TracPak is designed as a "plug 'n play" GPS solution, the minimum system
must provide a source of power and a clear view of the GPS satellites.
The system may communicate with the GPS 35 via two RS-232 compatible
bi-directional communication channels. Internal memory backup allows the
GPS 35 to retain critical data such as satellite orbital parameters,
last position, date, and time.
