Overview
For more than twenty years esa-systems has been manufacturing probes to measure any pressures relevant in aviation. Worldwide, a great number of aircraft have been equipped with esa-systems multiple probes, total energy probes and pitot tubes. Esa-systems supplies pressure probes worldwide to almost all sailplane manufacturers, several manufactures of general aviation and moreover, companies such as Diamond Aircraft and EADS are their customers. Esa-systems products are designed and manufactured in Germany.

Carbon Fiber vs. Aluminum Probes
Most esa-systems probes are made of carbon fiber tubes with machined aluminum parts. The carbon fiber tubes are extremely strong and very light-weight. They also have less of a tendency to oscillate or vibrate than probes made of metal. However, most of them can be ordered with black aluminum tubes (instead of carbon fiber tubes) for the same price, but the carbon fiber versions are the most popular around the world and are the ones we stock. The black aluminum versions are special orders. I highly recommend the carbon fiber versions.

AV - Adapter Plug, 6mm
This is a plug to keep esa-systems adapters free from insects and dust when the probe is removed. It has a small vent port to avoid creating pressure in the system when the plug is inserted and removed - which could damage the flight instruments. It also comes with a "Remove Before Flight" flag and a ring to connect the flag to the plug.

Caution: Using cloned (copied) plugs without a vent port can cause damage to the flight instruments.

Compatibility:

  • Works with 6 mm TE probe ports - which are not very common

AV - Adapter Plug, 8mm - Highly Recommended
This is a plug to keep esa-systems adapters free from insects and dust when the probe is removed. This "V" style TE Probe is the latest and highest performance TE probe available. It offers very good Total Energy compensation. It is exceptionally good at accommodating horizontal air movement caused by horizontal gusts or yawing of the aircraft. This version is compatible with ST1 mounting adapters - which have been built into many sailplanes.

RUT/ST - Total Energy Probe - Fuselage - for ST1 mounting adapters
This total energy probe is designed to be mounted vertically on the sailplane fuselage. It is my understanding that fuselage mounted TE probes are not nearly as accurate as TE probes that are mounted near the top of the vertical fin - pointing forward, but sometimes a tail mounted probe is not possible or practical.

BRT/ST - Total Energy Probe with Venturi Head - Fuselage - for ST1 mounting adapters
This total energy probe is designed to be mounted vertically on the sailplane fuselage. MNI/UN - Triple Probe
This is esa-systems' lowest cost triple probe. It is 220 mm (8.66 in) shorter and much heavier than the MNIC/UN and the DN/3-fach/UN carbon fiber triple probes. It is not available in a carbon fiber tube version - only in nickel plated brass. Since it is shorter, it doesn't get the probes as far out in front of the fin, making it slightly less accurate.

MNIC/UN - Triple Probe
This is a longer and lighter carbon fiber (or aluminum) version of the MNI/UN triple probe. It is 220 mm (8.66 in) longer and much lighter than the MNI/UN brass triple probe. Since it is longer, it gets the probes farther out in front of the fin, making it slightly more accurate. However, the TE compensation is probably not quite as good as the DN/3-fach/UN - which is almost as long as this probe.

ST1 - Mounting Adapter - Single-Function
This is the standard TE probe mounting adapter.

The ST1 is the most common type of probe mount. It has a single 8 mm port and is commonly used for TE probes and other single-port probes. Most aircraft have ST1 style TE probe ports with 8 mm ports. However, some glider types (LS) have ports with 6 mm ports. If you need a new single-port mount to your aircraft, you'll want an ST1 with an 8 mm port. The ST1 mounting adapter is not currently available with a 6 mm port. If you are adding a TE Probe to your sailplane or motorglider, and you don't ever plan to add additional functions (pitot and static) in the same location - the ST1 is the mounting adapter to buy. If you think you may want to change to triple-probe functionality (TE, pitot and static in a single probe) in the future, then you will want to install a UN or SUN mounting adapter. Select probes with "ST" in their model numbers for use with the ST1 mounting adapter.

UN - Mounting Adapter - 3-Function
The UN mounting adapter has 3 ports to accommodate triple probes which sense pitot, static and TE (Total Energy). Some sailplane manufacturers build the UN adapters into their aircraft, but most use the 20 mm longer, (but functionally identical) SUN (below) mounting adapter. Probes that work with the SUN mounting adapter also work with the UN mounting adapter. However, if probes that are designed for use with the SUN mounting adapter (such as carbon multiprobes MNIC/UN or DN/3-fach/UN) are used with a UN mounting adapter, the probe will work fine, but the collar on the probe will be located 20 mm from the tip of the mounting adapter. Therefore, the SUN mounting adapter is recommended for most applications. The UN should be used when the SUN is too long fit.

Two Versions
There are 2 slightly different length versions of the UN mounting adapter. Drawings for both lengths are shown at right.

Compatibility:

  • Works with 3-function probes of type UN.
