Table of Contents

The Glider Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge contains all of the information that a student must learn to meet the FAA requirements, to pass the FAA written test, and to pass the SSA bronze badge written test.

Inside the front cover of this handbook, you will find a list of topics titled “Aeronautical Knowledge Progress Record”.  The progress record includes every knowledge area that the student must master before taking the Private Pilot Knowledge Test, often referred to as the “written test”.  For every topic in the progress record, there is a corresponding section in this handbook. Extra copies of the progress record are available in the downloads section of the publisher's web site.

  • Covers all knowledge areas required to pass the FAA written and oral tests, and the SSA Bronze Badge Test
  • Logical, ordered, and complete presentation of material
  • Clear, straightforward writing and illustrations
  • Fully indexed
  • Glossary of soaring terms
  • 424 pages
  • 260 figures
  • 444 review questions with answer key (formerly available as a separate "Student Workbook")
  • Includes "Knowledge Training Progress Record"

Note: This book may seem expensive, but it is a very large and comprehensive book.  When comparing it with instructional book collections from other soaring authors, be sure to keep in mind that this one book covers many of the topics covered in multiple books by the other authors.  The price of this book compares favorably with the price of several books from the other authors.

Note: Much of the content from this book is taken from the F.A.A. publication Pilot's Handbook or Aeronautical Knowledge which is available in printed form, or as a free download.  Russell's intent was to add value to the material in the FAA publication by explaining it thoroughly, making it specific to glider operations, and adding any information that is not included in the FAA publication.  I feel that he achieved his goal - it is a useful addition to any glider pilot's library.
